How sweet it was...

...the years at Regis, I mean, still fresh today after seven decades, and Tom was and is an essential part of it. We were pals; we romped through that adventure together. He was a lovely kid, as even an unlovely kid like me could recognize: bright, funny and even tempered, an adolescent with a kind of dignity; the sort of easy person you wanted to be with. In 45 we went our separate ways, I to the service of the Lord, he just to the service. After a spell we wisely switched places: he served the Lord (immeasurably more successfully than I) and I took the more humble path into the academic service. I thought about him often and I finally got in touch. We met for lunch. And the wonder of it! The lovely kid was now the lovely man. We dont all survive our growing up. Tom did, and then some. The man was what the boy promised to be: still bright, now smarter, still funny, now affable, a trifle more serious perhaps (that tiny peek of purple) but as remote from pomposity as I am from cool. I almost signed on as a curate! Im better for knowing Tom Leonard. I have a feeling Im not alone. Frank Peters, Regis 45
